After seeing a post with Tyson Durfey and Tomi Lahren saying ‘Rodeo Rejects Pride’ night, I felt like I needed to continue the conversation as the clip only showed a brief snippet of the conversation. I think that headline doesn’t get to the heart of things. Maybe Tyson went on to say this, I’m not sure. I think rodeo shouldn’t have a particular theme night that caters to a single belief. Theme nights should be something everyone can all get behind- military appreciation night, breast cancer awareness, etc! See all these people behind us? All different races, religions, and beliefs. Some may hold traditional beliefs about marriage and family. Others don’t. But no matter where people stand, everyone is treated with respect. We have to make sure rodeo remains a place where all people feel welcome. There are gay people who love rodeo. There are gay people in rodeo families. There are gay people sitting in those stands, working behind the scenes, loving the same horses, bulls, flags, and traditions the rest of us do. There’s even a gay rodeo association. Ty Murray had a gay uncle and has a gay cousin, both who grew up in cowboy families and are loved dearly. Rodeo has always been rooted in western tradition, family, faith, and patriotism. Rodeo may choose not to have a pride night- as rodeo shouldn’t become a battleground for cultural issues. The focus should stay on the sport, the families, the animals, and the western way of life while making sure everyone feels welcome.
