Smothered Hamburger Steak and Onions

Not much says southern comfort food like smothered hamburger steak and onions! It’s such a great way to use ground beef and it comes together in a jiffy making it an easy, family friendly supper! This is a nourishing dish that’s high in protein.

My Mama would make this often when I was growing up and it tasted so delicious and satisfying after swim team practice. My mama doesn’t make the gravy to go with her hamburger steaks. She just cooks the onions with the meat and we would dip it in A.1. sauce.

Serve With…

Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, steamed vegetables, green beans, lima beans, tomato slices, okra, or other vegetables!

If you’re in a hurry I love the canned Glory Seasoned Country Style String Beans with Potatoes and get some minute rice or rice-a-roni for a full meal!

Tips

  • You can easily half this recipe to serve 2-4 people
  • I used a 15 inch cast iron skillet so I had room to cook all the patties and onions at once. You may need to cook the the patties in 2 skillets or 2 batches if you can’t fit them all in your skillet.
  • If you use a leaner beef than 85% lean, add two tablespoons of oil to your skillet before cooking.

On the Ranch…

This week I received a hard copy of my debut children’s book Rosie’s Wild Ride in from the printer! We have had SO much fun reading it together with the family. What a dream come true! Thank you to everyone who has already preordered it!! I’m so thankful for you. Check it out by clicking here !

Hamburger steaks smothered with sweet onions and gravy

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds 85% lean ground beef

  • 6 tablespoons of A.1. steak sauce

  • 2 sweet vidalia onions, sliced thin

  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour

  • 2 cups of beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp pepper

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Directions

  • Mix together the flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder in a pan (big enough to fit a burger)
  • Preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. I used a 15 inch cast iron skillet.
  • Mix the ground beef and A.1. sauce together. This is easiest with your hands.
  • Form 6-8 beef patties and set aside.
  • Coat each beef patty in flour.
  • Place patties and onions in pan and brown for 3 minutes.
  • Flip patties and onion and brown for 3 minutes longer. Smash the patties down with your spatula when you flip them.
  • Remove patties and set on a plate.
  • Sprinkle remaining flour over the onions and drippings and brown flour for about 3 minutes, scraping up any bits with the spatula.
  • Add beef broth and Worcestershire to the skillet and stir. Bring to a low boil and cook, stirring, for about one minute.
  • Return the beef patties to the skillet and reduce the heat to low. Simmer until the meat is cooked through about 15 minutes longer.
